My husband was started on IV Ertepenem for a liver abscess (which could be not biopsied due to its location). The first day he commented on unusual visuals he would see when he closed his eyes. By day 12 he was having full blown auditory and visual hallucinations, and uncontrollable fidgeting. The Infectious Disease physician realized this was a reaction to the antibiotic and it was stopped. Within 4 days my husband’s behavior was back to normal. I researched this and I think the antibiotic reacted with the GABA receptors as you mentioned in the article. Neurotoxicity occurs in less than 1% of patients on this drug.
